| Carl Morrison in 1940 , at 19,
owned a Bakery near Portland Oregon and registered with the draft board
as required . He sold the bakery to a guy that worked for him, and was
working for another baker when he got his draft notice . He hadn't
decided what Branch he wanted so he sent the notice back. He
moved to Los Angeles and was working as a night watchman near March Air
Force Base. A friend who was an enlisted man at the base talked him into
coming over to the base where he happened to arrive while there were
taking tests for cadet candidates and they asked him if he wanted to
take the tests and he did. A couple weeks later he got another notice
from the draft board and they had been looking all over for him. He went
out to Mach field and told a Major who was reviewing the cadet candidate
tests which he had passed, That he had received the notice and the Major
said " Raise your right hand' and he was sworn into the air corps
as an Aviation Cadet
He trained ,Preflight at Santa Anna Air Base, Primary in the
Sterman at Thunderbird Air Base Phoenix, Basic in the BT13 at Marana Air
Base Arizona , Advanced in the AT 23 at Moses Lake Air Base in
Washington Graduating from Cadets in Oct. 1943. He took his transition
training in B17s at Sioux City Iowa and Flew a B17 to
Ireland in March of 1944, Married Beverly in Feb 1944 at Moses
Lake
He joined the 369th Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group 40th Bomb Wing
of the 8th Air force in April of 1944. At that point there were 25
pilots in his Squadron and when he finished his missions in August of
1945 There were 6 that survived. They were the first bombers over Berlin
and his missions are listed below. Heavy flak Heavy Damage on all
mission and on his 13th mission he landed with all engines shot out.
