Aviation Machinists Mate 3/C Francis Munnikhuysen was a member of the famous Patrol Bombimg Squadron 208. Formed in Corpus Christi December 1942 its purpose to patrol the vast ocean areas in search of elusive submarines. They Flew PBY 3s and his crew had 4 Jap. ships to their credit. Munnikhuysen was a flight engineer,radar operator and aerial gunner  He recieved his DFCs and Air medals at a special ceremony of the Naval Reserve after he had finished his 3 1/2 yesra of service.

Their Squadron was envolved in the mission that leveled Toyko shown in the above picture

One night on a patrol near Okinawa they were alerted that they were the only US aircratf who could interupt a flight of 5 Japanese Bombers headed to Bomb Okinawa. They were able to find the Bombers and made their attack. Munnikhuysen was in the top turret and shot down one of the Bombers on a return attack the Bombers split up and flew off in all directions and no bombing was performed on Okinawa
